Boise Orthopedic Clinic, an affiliate of Orthopedic Centers of Idaho, has been providing quality musculoskeletal care to the Treasure Valley for over 40 years. With a staff of 69 employees in 6 locations, the Boise Orthopedic Clinic serves approximately 140 to 160 patients daily in Boise, Meridian, McCall, and Weiser, Idaho.

Orthopedics and orthopedic surgery involve the preservation and restoration of the function of the musculoskeletal system. This includes the treatment of acute injuries and disorders of the muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, and joints. It also includes the treatment of chronic conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, and musculoskeletal pain, as well as the treatment of children's malformations and growth disorders.

Business Challenge:
Faced with the growing need to improve workflow efficiency, as well as the desire to remain consistent with current technology, Boise Orthopedic Clinic contacted Integra in April 1999. The primary goals set forth by the clinic administrative staff was to:

• To switch from microfilm to imaging
• To provide immediate access to multiple remote locations
• Solve storage difficulties
• Eliminate inefficient system of always having to pull charts back from off-site storage location

Why Documentum?
Documentum’s ApplicationXtender, otherwise known as AX, was the logical solution for Boise Orthopedic to attain their document management goals. AX is the complete information management solution, from a simple storage solution to a clinic-wide system. AX keeps track of the time and date that the information was scanned in and can track who has been using the system and how many times a function has been performed within the system. AX also provides facsimile capabilities, electronic mail capabilities, and access to patient information from the Internet/Intranet, with a product called WebXtender.

Healthcare providers can access much needed information from practically any location. Documentum has protected confidential patient information through multiple security levels. When asked to describe in his own words why the clinic chose Documentum, Administrator James Lineberger replied “I relied on Integra’s expertise and their recommendation satisfied me while fulfilling our organizational goals.”

Solution Highlights:
Boise Orthopedic has been able to eliminate having to pull charts back from the remote storage facility with the ability to have immediate access with the AX viewer software. This year the clinic had completed their first in-house records purge, significantly reducing the burdens of the records management department. “Being able to have immediate access is great, we have been able to significantly reduce our turnaround time.” Describing the performance of the system, Doris continued, “Because our forms are colorized, we were surprised at the legibility of the documents, it’s phenomenal!”

AX has also opened avenues to Boise Orthopedic for future imaging developments such as the integration of medical records into the system as well as the complete transfer of old records from microfilm to disk, significantly increasing the square footage in office space.
